Guardian Home Opportunity
We are committed to assuring that our dogs have a home where they will be given the love and nurturing they need.
What is a Guardian Home?
A guardian home relationship is where we, the breeder, place one or two of our future breeding puppies in homes where they will be cherished, protected, and nurtured. Our goal is to place guardian puppies in forever families where they will have a wonderful life with people who love them, and our families get loving companions without having to pay the regular cost of a puppy. The puppy, who becomes a mature dog, lives with you and while we retain breeding rights, the puppy becomes your family member in all other aspects. Once the dog is finished their breeding career, they will be spayed/neutered. If you are interested in being a guardian home for an upcoming litter, please fill out the application.
How It Works
As a guardian family, we require that you license the dogs with the city or town you live in. You would be responsible for all the normal pet care, such as feeding, grooming, normal vet visits, flea/tick prevention, training, and toys. We will be responsible for any breeding related expenses such as breeding fees, ultrasounds, microchips, and hip/elbow, eye testing, or anything else associated with breeding.
Typically a female dog cycles every 6–9 months. Once matured we may begin breeding them. Prior to breeding, we do a variety of different tests on them to ensure they are the best dogs for breeding. We will ask that you contact us at the start of each heat cycle, even if we will not be breeding to help determine her cycle and to coordinate when we will need to have her to be bred. A female guardian home dog will have a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 litters. Although we prefer 5 litters, we will determine this number based on each individual dog’s situation. Some dogs love being mothers and others will need to be done after the 3rd litter.
For our studs, the commitment is higher as we can use our studs more often. Our studs go through all the same testing as the females and once our most fertile female breeding days have been figured out, we will ask the stud to be delivered for a few days and then picked back up to allow him to rest between breedings.
Guardian Homes Requirements at a Glance
Below is an overview of requirements for our guardian homes:
Provide and pay for all necessary care to keep the dog in sound physical condition that would normally be required if you were to purchase a puppy outright from us or another breeder (this includes food, grooming, regular exercise, boarding, training, and routine medical care)
Feed the guardian a good high-quality balanced diet free of corn, wheat, and soy
House the dog indoors (our guardian dogs are non-shedding and have no undercoat to protect them from the cold)
Be willing to protect females against unwanted conception
Have a safe and secure place for the dog to play outside, such as a fenced backyard or dog run
Not allow the dog to run around unattended unless in your fenced yard or dog run
Bring the dog to us as requested for breeding, whelping, health testing, etc.
Maintain open and honest lines of communications with matters relating to the dog/puppy
Provide regular updates
Send photographs on occasion (simple snapshots are fine)
Notify us of any period of time when you are unable to care for the dog (we prefer to board guardian dogs as it helps them feel comfortable with us when they come for whelping and breeding visits)
Live within the southern Alberta area and be willing to travel to our home for breeding purposes when needed
Notify us of new contact information, for example, your cell number or e-mail changes
Be flexible, we are looking for families that are easy to get along with and want to be a part of our Red Bred family
Commit to love this puppy who becomes a mature dog for many years to come
